Medicaid

  • CMS releases an updated 2018 Cost Performance Category Fact Sheet. The cost performance category uses provider Medicare claims data to collect Medicare payment information for the care given to beneficiaries during a specific period of time. (CMS.gov)

Medicare

  • Distribution of new Medicare cards will begin this week. One key difference is the inclusion of a new Medicare number, unique to each recipient, replacing the use of social security numbers. CMS urges Medicare recipients to guard their new Medicare number just as they would their social security number to protect from scammers. (CMS.gov)

  • A recent report by the OIG found that from 2014-2015, 31% of telehealth services paid by CMS did not meet Medicare requirements. The OIG estimates that $3.7 million could have been saved had the services prescribed followed Medicare requirements. (OIG.gov)

Private Sector

  • In a report published April 6, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services revealed that in fiscal year 2017, the Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Control Program returned $2.6 billion to the federal government. Additionally, 639 defendants were convicted of health care related crimes in 2017, and 948 new civil health care fraud investigations were opened. (OIG.HHS.gov)
