Legislation

  • President Trump will give a highly anticipated speech later today on his plans for controlling prescription drug prices. Senior administration officials told journalists on Thursday that the President will not call for Medicare to negotiate lower prices with drug manufacturers. (NYTimes.com)

 

  • In a May 8 letter to President Trump, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) proposed that Congress rescind $800 million from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. OMB argues that "these funds are in excess of amounts needed to carry out the Innovation Center's planned activities in FYs 2018 and 2019." (WhiteHouse.gov)

Litigation

  • New York and Minnesota have settled a case filed earlier this year in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The states challenged that HHS abruptly cut off over $1 billion in annual funding for state-run health insurance programs for low-income citizens. HHS will pay $151.9 million to New York and $17.3 million to Minnesota by May 14. (AG.NY.gov)

Private Sector

  • A new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation revealed that the United States spends twice as much on healthcare per capita than any other high-income country. (HealthSystemTracker.org)

 

  • According to an internal document obtained by CNBC, Amazon has built a team within its Alexa voice-assistant division called "health & wellness." The group is targeting areas like diabetes management, care for mothers and infants, and aging. (CNBC.com)
